Data scope

The 2023 Survey of Financial Security covers the ten provinces and excludes Indigenous communities and collective dwellings. It does not publish age-by-province percentiles in this table.

Official 2023 medians

Statistics Canada defines net worth as the value of all assets minus all debts. The population includes economic families and persons not in an economic family; age refers to the major income recipient.

How to interpret the benchmark

A median is the midpoint, not an average and not a recommended target. Housing, employer pensions, family structure and debt can materially change the comparison. Statistics Canada also cautions that its sample is not representative of families with very high wealth, so top-wealth shares can be understated.
